Overview

Santa Cruz is the big island you picture when you think Channel Islands—rugged ridgelines, cliffy coast, and wildlife you won’t see anywhere else. Most visitors land at Scorpion Anchorage, where a small visitor center orients you to the island’s biodiversity and rich human history. On boat days, volunteers or naturalists often lead guided hikes; when they don’t, grab a self-guided booklet and go.

What You’ll See

Expect sweeping ocean vistas, canyons, kelp-fringed coves, and classic viewpoints right from the Scorpion area. Trails also fan out from Prisoners Harbor if you’re after quieter routes. Sea caves are a marquee feature here—including the famed Painted Cave—best appreciated by kayak or from boat tours.

Wildlife

Keep your eyes peeled for the island’s celebrity residents: the Santa Cruz Island fox and the island scrub-jay. Offshore, dolphins, seals, and sea lions are common sights from the boat, with whales appearing seasonally.

• Hiking: Multiple signed routes from both Scorpion and Prisoners, with panoramic bluff walks and canyon rambles.
• Ranger/Volunteer Programs: On days boats run, guided hikes typically start about 30 minutes after arrival; otherwise, self-guided materials are available.
• On the Water: Kayaking and snorkeling are popular in the clear, kelp-lined coves.
• Camping: Scorpion Canyon Campground sits a short walk inland; Del Norte is a backcountry option from Prisoners Harbor.

What’s Different Here

This is the park’s most popular and most logistically simple island—great for a first visit. But it’s still true island wilderness: no stores, no trash services, and only primitive facilities. Plan like a backpacker even on a day trip.

Need-to-Know Logistics

• Bring all food and most of your water. Potable water is available at Scorpion Canyon Campground; there’s none at Prisoners Harbor.
• Facilities are basic: expect vault toilets and picnic tables in key day-use and camp areas.
• Much of the island’s western portion is off-limits to general visitors; stay on park land and signed routes.

Best Time to Visit

Any day the boats run works, but weekends and holidays book fast—reserve early. If you want a guided hike, aim for a boat day to Scorpion and be ready to join soon after landing. Mornings can be cool and breezy; afternoons often feel warmer and clearer. First-timers should default to Scorpion for the widest mix of trails and interpretive options.
