Overview

If you like your viewpoints quiet and a little wild, Dutton Ridge Overlook delivers. It’s an unsigned pullout along the east rim road with an off-trail climb up open pumice to a high ridge. Expect solitude, big sky, and a choose-your-own-line ascent rather than a manicured overlook.

What You'll See

From the ridge, you get sweeping views to the south, with the option to continue along the crest toward Dutton Cliff for commanding looks into the caldera. The landscape is classic Mazama—loose pumice underfoot with scattered “tree islands” punctuating the otherwise open slopes.

Getting There & Route

Park at the broad curve on East Rim Drive just past Sun Notch. From the pullout, head straight uphill, generally keeping to the right of the trees across open pumice. There’s no established trail. It’s roughly 1.25 miles to the ridge with about 800 feet of gain, soft at first and firmer near the top.

Difficulty & Terrain

Short but punchy. The initial pumice is ankle-deep in spots and slows you down; sturdy footwear helps. Exposure is real—little shade or shelter outside the scattered tree islands, and wind can be a factor on the crest.

Wildlife

Sightings aren’t a given here, but nearby routes have produced deer encounters. The mix of open pumice and forest patches also makes it reasonable to watch for birds of prey and small mammals along the margins.

Best Time to Visit

Come when Rim Drive is open (typically summer into early fall). Weekdays keep the drive quieter. For photos, early or late light flatters the pumice textures and ridge contours, and you’ll avoid the harsh midday sun on this exposed slope.

Know Before You Go

There are no facilities—no water, no restrooms, no signs. Bring what you need and know how to navigate off-trail. Seasonal snow closures can shut this section of Rim Drive for long stretches each year, so check conditions before you commit.

Pros

  • Solitude at an unmarked roadside pullout
  • Off-trail pumice hike to broad ridge-top views

Cons

  • Loose pumice makes for slow, calf-burning footing
  • No signage or facilities; route-finding required

Tips

  • Use a map or GPS—there’s no signed trail and no markers.
  • Wear sturdy boots; the lower pumice is soft and slow-going.
  • Start early or late for softer light and cooler temps on the exposed ridge.
  • Carry all your water and essentials; there are no services at the pullout.
