Pros & cons

Overview
Sun Notch is a short loop with an outsized payoff: multiple rim overlooks with knockout views of Crater Lake and the jagged Phantom Ship formation. The loop is about 0.8 miles total, with roughly 100–150 feet of climbing on natural pumice/dirt tread. It’s consistently described as easy, though there are a few short, steeper or uneven sections.
What You’ll See
The draw here is Phantom Ship—arguably the park’s most photogenic rock outcrop—and broad caldera vistas from several angles, plus glimpses of nearby Applegate Peak and Dutton Cliff. The path moves through mountain hemlock forest and an open pumice meadow before reaching the lake-side viewpoints. Benches and low rock walls at a couple of stops make it easy to linger.
Trail Feel and Crowd Factor
Expect a quick, family-friendly stroll that feels more like a sequence of scenic overlooks than a “hike.” It’s popular and can be busy during peak season; the short distance and marquee views attract a steady stream of visitors. If you’re touring East Rim Drive, it’s an ideal leg-stretcher with maximum scenery per minute.
Logistics
The trail sits off East Rim Drive, roughly 4.4 miles east of Park Headquarters, with a small pullout/lot that fills fast in summer. The loop is unpaved, on dirt and pumice, and not wheelchair accessible despite some flat sections. There are no restrooms at the trailhead. Pets are not allowed on this trail.
Best Time to Hike
July through September is the sweet spot; snow often lingers from October into early July. For photography, morning or late afternoon light treats Phantom Ship best and softens the lake’s intense blues. Arrive early for parking and lighter crowds, or time it near sunset if you’re comfortable returning before dark.
Tips
- Stay on the established path—steep drop-offs guard the rim in places, and footing can be loose. Supervise kids closely.
- Bring sun protection and water; the rim sections are exposed and dry.
- If the lot is full, circle back later rather than parking unsafely along the road.
