Overview
Cathedral Spires is the heart of the Needles—soaring, needle-like granite towers that feel like a natural stone cathedral. From the first steps you’re in it: tight corridors of granite, cool pine shade, then a sudden opening into a high meadow ringed by spires. It’s the quintessential Needles experience in a bite-sized hike.
The Hike
- Distance and effort: about 1.5–2 miles round-trip with roughly 500 feet of gain. Expect rock steps, some brief scrambly sections, and steady uphill on the way out. It’s “moderate,” but the rocky bits make it feel adventurous.
- Payoff: a flat, open basin beneath the towers, with wide views across the Black Hills. The signed trail ends beneath the spires, and you can carefully poke around the surrounding nooks and gullies.
