Perched on a tight switchback about 2 miles east of Sylvan Lake on Needles Highway, Cathedral Spires Overlook doubles as the access point for the Cathedral Spires Trail. You’re staring straight into a skyline of slender, jagged granite—"the Needles"—with the rock rising almost out of the pavement.

Hiking From Here

• The Cathedral Spires Trail starts at this spot. Expect a short-but-steep outing (roughly 0.9 miles one-way on one mapped segment; many describe 1.5–1.9 miles round-trip) with uneven footing, brief scrambles, and big payoff views among the formations.
• Trails connect into the Black Elk Wilderness; strong hikers often link routes toward Little Devils Tower or even Black Elk Peak for a bigger day.

Wildlife

Mountain goats favor these rocky crags and are realistically spotted near the overlook and on the connectors above. Deer, marmots, and various birds are also noted in the area; bison and bighorn sheep are less common at these higher elevations.

The approach along the Peter Norbeck National Byway/Needles Highway is part of the fun—think single‑lane tunnels, tight curves, and stacked road segments with sweeping scenery. The trade‑off: limited pullouts and a small trailhead lot that fills fast, plus occasional backups at the tunnels.

Safety Notes

If you wander off the established paths among the spires, expect maze‑like terrain and sudden drop‑offs between rock saddles. Wear sturdy shoes, watch your footing, and be weather‑aware—this area is exposed and can turn windy.
