This quick stop along famed Iron Mountain Road (US 16A) serves up sweeping Black Hills scenery and, on clear days, a distant peek at Mount Rushmore. It’s one of the classic pullouts on this slow, scenic drive—sometimes referred to as the Peter Norbeck Overlook, after the visionary who championed the road.
Why it’s special
Iron Mountain Road is a work of art: 314 curves, 14 switchbacks, three pigtail bridges, and three narrow tunnels that deliberately frame Mount Rushmore as you approach. This overlook lets you step out, breathe in the pine-scented air, and photograph the ridgelines, meadows, and the clever roadway weaving below.

This is a straightforward pullout with a small parking area and interpretive signage. There are no restrooms, water, or services—plan accordingly. The road is intentionally slow and narrow; enter and exit the pullout with care, especially during the busy summer season.
Best time to visit
Aim for clear weather for the best distant views and photos. Summer afternoons can clog with traffic; earlier or later in the day tends to feel calmer. If you want the famous “tunnel frames” of Rushmore as you drive, head south-to-north toward the memorial. Check for seasonal conditions—this road isn’t always maintained in winter.
