This is the gateway to a moderate 3.1-mile loop that dips into a cool, shaded ravine feeding the Cuyahoga River. The trail starts at the far corner of the Happy Days Lodge parking lot and quickly trades pavement for forest, ridges, and the burble of Boston Run stream.
Expect mature oak–maple–beech–tulip woods and a stream corridor lined with birches whose peeling, rootbeer-scented bark is a quirky highlight. The cool, clear water and dense shade create a distinctive microclimate, and the valley supports sensitive aquatic life like salamanders along with common woodland birds such as woodpeckers. Spring brings wildflowers in the streamside woods.
It’s a true forest walk: hilly in places, serene, and occasionally muddy—especially after rain or in spring. The loop parallels and crosses the stream, with short climbs to and from the ravine. If you want to trim mileage, there’s a signed shortcut mid-loop.
You’ll find an information kiosk/bulletin board at the trailhead, plus benches, picnic tables, trash receptacles, and auto parking in the Happy Days Lodge lot. No restrooms are listed for this trailhead.
Right across the road, the short Haskell Run loop offers an easy bonus walk through a similar stream-valley setting.
Go early or on weekdays for quieter trails and better wildlife activity. After wet weather, plan on mud. Spring light and foliage are great for photography along the stream; summer’s shade keeps it comfortable; fall color pops on the ridges.
Hikers who want a peaceful, moderately rolling loop with classic forest-and-stream vibes—plus a few naturalist-friendly details like those distinctive birches.
