Overview
Octagon Shelter is an eight-sided picnic pavilion in the Virginia Kendall area, beside a broad grassy playfield and near the Ledges Trail System. It makes most sense as a planned group picnic, or as a quick look for anyone interested in CCC-era architecture. The pavilion can be reserved for groups of up to 50; check the booking terms if you plan to picnic here.

Guide
Its low, broad roof, heavy timber frame and stone chimneys are classic parkitecture: rustic park design that uses local forms and materials to sit naturally in its setting. Local architect Albert Goode designed this shelter and the nearby Ledges Shelter; sandstone and chestnut timber tie the pair to the valley.
Civilian Conservation Corps workers completed both shelters by 1939. The chestnut lumber came from American chestnut trees affected by chestnut blight, so the structure's wood carries a piece of the valley's environmental history as well as its design story.
The pavilion has seven tables, two stone fireplaces and an outdoor grill. It has no central heat; drinking water is seasonal, while flush restrooms are available year-round. The pavilion and its restroom are accessible, and a paved lot serves the site. Bring the food yourself; this is a picnic shelter, not a café stop.
Step back on the field side and leave some lawn around the pavilion in the frame. That shows the low roof and stone chimneys together in their setting; a tight crop of one fireplace loses the shelter's unusual shape.
