Virginia Kendall Ledges Overlook

Overview

Perched atop the Ritchie Ledges, this rocky, west-facing perch delivers broad views over the forested valley and caps off the beloved 1.8-mile Ledges Trail loop. The overlook is a natural stone platform—simple, scenic, and popular—so expect company when the light gets good.

Geology & History

The Ritchie Ledges are Sharon Conglomerate sandstone—pebbly, erosion-resistant rock shaped over millions of years into 100-foot cliffs and narrow passages. The Virginia Kendall area was once a private retreat and was later developed in the 1930s by the Civilian Conservation Corps before becoming part of the national park in 1974.

Best Time to Visit

Sunset is the headline show thanks to the westward view, but it also draws crowds. For elbow room, come early morning or on weekdays. If you’re timing golden hour, plan ahead—area listings show posted hours around daytime (e.g., 7 AM–7 PM), so check and time your visit accordingly.

On the Trail

Start from the main Ledges parking area by the Ledges Shelter; the trail quickly drops beneath towering rock walls before climbing to the rim and the overlook. The loop is short but rocky and uneven in spots—sturdy footwear helps. No climbing on the rock formations.

Wildlife

This big block of forest supports typical Ohio woodland life—think deer, squirrels and chipmunks, plenty of songbirds, and occasional wild turkeys. Bring binoculars if you like to scan the canopy from the rim.

Facilities

You’ll find parking, restrooms, and picnic tables by the Ledges Shelter near the trailhead. There are no food services or water fill stations here, so come prepared.
