Overview
A classic pull-over with a world-class payoff, Walu Wugirriga delivers that Daintree moment where rainforest spills to the Coral Sea. It sits about ten minutes north of the Daintree River ferry on the Great Barrier Reef Drive, and most visits are a satisfying 15–30 minutes.
What You’ll See
From the platform you’re looking over the Daintree River estuary, the rainforest canopy and the Coral Sea. On clear days you can pick out Port Douglas, Shipwreck Bay, Snapper Island, Cape Kimberley and Black Rock; visibility can even stretch to Double Island near Palm Cove. Low Isles is often in the mix, too.
Cultural Context & History
The Traditional Owners are the Eastern Kuku Yalanji people, and the name Walu Wugirriga means “look about.” The site was purchased by the Queensland Government in 1993 and opened for public use. The colonial name likely nods to Princess Alexandra (married King Edward VII in 1863).
Wildlife
Keep an eye out for the brilliant blue Ulysses butterfly drifting past the lookout. In season, Pied imperial pigeons commute between the islands and mainland. General rainforest birdlife is active—binoculars help.
Logistics
Access is via a sealed road suitable for 2WD. The lookout itself is free, but you’ll need to pay the Daintree River ferry to get here. There are no toilets, water or bins at the site; bring what you need and take rubbish with you. Parking is limited, so avoid blocking the road and supervise kids near the edges.
Best Time to Visit
Clear mornings usually bring the sharpest visibility toward the reef. Late afternoons offer warm golden light and can be quieter. Weekdays are generally less busy than weekends. After rain, low cloud can sit in the valley and obscure the view, so check the forecast.
Photography Tips
Go wide to capture the full rainforest-to-reef sweep, then switch to a telephoto to isolate islands and coastline. Use the layered canopy in the foreground for depth. If you’re considering a drone, follow park regulations.

Make it a short, high-impact stop en route to Cape Trib: add nearby rainforest boardwalks like Dubuji or Kulki, beaches such as Cow Bay, or even a croc-spotting cruise on the Daintree River.
