Yindilli Camping Ground

Overview

Yindilli Camping Ground is a small, bush‑style campground tucked along the CREB Track, where open eucalypt meets rainforest and a clear creek runs beside camp. Expect spacious grassy sites with plenty of shade, the sound of water at night, and a real sense of being out there—this is a proper Far North Queensland bush camp, not a resort.

Access and Getting There

Reaching Yindilli is part of the adventure. From Daintree Village it’s about 38 km, but the steep, unsealed CREB Track makes it a slow ~2.5‑hour 4WD drive. From the north, it’s roughly 27 km via China Camp Road or the Zig Zag Track (about 1 hour in dry conditions). The track becomes slippery with even light rain, and caravans are not recommended. Check weather and local advice before you go.

Facilities and Camp Setup

You’ll find septic toilets and showers, spacious grassy sites for tents and RVs, and designated fireplaces (ask about dry firewood). The freshwater creek beside camp is the star—great for a cooling dip when conditions are suitable. Pets are allowed; keep dogs under tight control as this is cassowary country. Given the remoteness, arrive self‑sufficient with drinking water and a way to manage your rubbish.

Cultural Experiences

What truly sets Yindilli apart are the guided walks with CJ Fischer, a Kuku Yalanji Elder and Buru Traditional Owner. The Rainforest Walk (about 3.5 hours total) includes a welcome smoke ceremony, bush‑tucker identification, stories, and damper with tea. The full‑day Cultural Sites Walk (around 6 hours) layers on traditional clay painting, more cultural storytelling, bush‑tucker demonstrations, bathing in the Meg River, and a picnic lunch. Wildlife and Creek Time

Birdlife is abundant and cassowaries are occasionally seen—give them space and never feed them. The creek beside camp is inviting; conditions can change after rain, so enter slowly and only swim where hosts say it’s safe.

Best Time to Visit

Go in dry conditions for safer access and a more relaxing stay. The CREB Track can turn treacherous after showers, so plan travel for a dry spell. There’s no bad hour at camp, but arriving earlier in the day gives you a buffer if the track takes longer than expected.

Practical Prep
