Dubuji Boardwalk

Dubuji Boardwalk is the longer 1.5 km circuit from the Bamanga Muruku Tourism Hub. Allow about 45 minutes. Published distance figures still vary from 1.2 to 1.5 km; this record uses 1.5 km for the full circuit. It is an easy Grade 1 walk and a good pick if you want to get into the Daintree’s lowland forest without taking on a climb. The path is mostly raised boardwalk, with short track joins between sections, following rainforest beneath tall palms, spring-fed creeks and freshwater swamp into salty mangroves. There is no lookout or sweeping view here; the reward is seeing the wet forest change around you as you go.

The official time is short, but this walk is better when you pay attention to the transitions. Pause where the creeks cross the route, then watch the water and vegetation change again as freshwater swamp gives way to mangroves. Visitors repeatedly praise the flat boardwalk and the mix of habitats; a few describe the mangrove edges as muddy or stagnant-looking. Those are wetland margins, not a reason to leave the marked route. Wheelchair access is listed with assistance, so do not assume every section is independently step-free.

Dubuji means “place of spirits.” Signs along the walk explain how plants and animals manage the changes between rainforest, freshwater swamp and mangroves. The Daintree contains most of the world’s 19 primitive plant families, and this is a good place to notice that the forest is not one uniform wall of green: palms rise over the boardwalk, swamp plants crowd the freshwater section, and mangroves fringe the creek where the water turns salty. Give the signs a few minutes; the habitat story is the main attraction.

Look into shallow pools for little and azure kingfishers, and scan the forest floor for orange-footed scrubfowl. Cassowaries can be seen in this part of the park, but do not count on a sighting. The boardwalk keeps the walk on a durable route through wet ground, so stay on it and watch from there rather than stepping into the swamp or mangroves.

The full circuit is the longer walk, not the separate 740 m short loop or the 740 m return track to Myall Beach; both shorter walks take about 20 minutes. Choose the short loop if time is tight, or add the beach track separately if you want sand and a coastal view. The Bamanga Muruku Tourism Hub is an Eastern Kuku Yalanji social enterprise with cultural displays, tours and events. Use the Dubuji day-use car park on Cape Tribulation Road, about 34 km north of the Daintree ferry and 5 km past Noah Beach. The day-use area has a grassy shaded picnic area, some sheltered tables and flush toilets. A food vendor or drinking-water point was not identified for the trailhead, so plan those at another stop. Pets, other than approved assistance animals, are not allowed in Queensland national parks. Crocodiles live in the area; follow Be Crocwise advice around creeks and mangroves.
