Overview

This photogenic covered footbridge sits on the Flume Gorge loop, perched just above The Pool on the Pemigewasset River. It’s not just pretty—its backstory is fantastic: after a 1938 hurricane toppled a towering white pine that once guarded the cliffs, about 60 feet of the trunk became the bridge’s main support. The current 60‑foot bridge (a kingpost truss pegged together) feels like a time capsule tucked into a granite-walled ravine.

What You’ll See

From the bridge and the nearby overlook you’re peering into The Pool, a natural basin roughly 150 feet across and about 40 feet deep, rimmed by cliffs that rise to around 130 feet. It’s a classic Franconia Notch scene—polished granite, teal water, and tall woods framing everything.

Getting There

Start at the Flume Gorge Visitor Center and follow the 2‑mile loop (plan ~1.5 hours with stairs and some uphill). You’ll reach the bridge via the Wildwood Path through glacial boulders or by taking the Ridge Path past Liberty Gorge. There are no amenities at the bridge itself—use restrooms at the Visitor Center before you go. Note: the short Rim Path is closed, so you’ll do the full loop to reach and exit the bridge.

A Bit of Context

The bridge was built in 1939 by the Society for the Protection of New Hampshire Forests after the great “sentinel” pine fell in the 1938 hurricane. The Pool has drawn sightseers since the 1800s—back then, a local guide famously rowed visitors around while spinning theories about the Earth’s interior.

Seasonality and Access

Flume Gorge typically runs mid‑May to late October. For 2025, it operates May 9–October 26 (trail 9 am–5 pm through October 13, then 9 am–4 pm October 14–26). Boardwalk sections are rebuilt regularly to handle frost heaves. Off‑season, the boardwalks are removed and conditions can be icy—traction helps, and you should check current status before attempting a visit. Reservations are recommended in season, and pets aren’t allowed on the Flume Gorge loop.

Photography Notes

Best views are from The Pool overlook and mid‑span on the bridge. Early or late in the day softens glare on the water‑polished granite and brings out color in the river. After rain, the wood can be slick—step carefully.

Best Time to Visit

Aim for weekday mornings right at opening for fewer people and gentler light. Late afternoons also photograph well once the sun drops behind the cliffs. In peak season, book tickets ahead to keep your timing flexible.
