Pros & cons
PROS
- Lakeside loop offers easy, scenic walking after a stout climb
- Hut near the lake provides snacks and restrooms when open
CONS
- Parking at Lafayette Place fills early on busy days
- Steep, rocky sections can be muddy and slick after rain
Park at the Lafayette Place lot in Franconia Notch and start from the signed Lonesome Lake trailhead.
Steep, rocky ascent with slick mud after rain; icy in winter—bring microspikes. Facilities and hut hours can be seasonal. Pet access within the notch corridor is limited and may exclude this trail; confirm current rules.
Overview
This classic 3.0‑mile loop serves up a steady, shaded climb to a tranquil mountain lake, plus big peeks toward Franconia Ridge along the way. Expect a moderate workout on the ascent, then an easygoing stroll around the shoreline before returning the way you came. Total distance is for the full loop including the lakeside circuit.
Trail Notes
From the Lafayette Place/Lonesome Lake trailhead, follow well‑marked yellow blazes up a consistent grade with a few steeper, rocky steps. The forested climb keeps you cool and out of the sun, but rocks and roots can be slick or muddy after rain. Once you reach the water, the path around the lake eases into grassy, mellow footing with plenty of photo spots and spots to dip your feet.
A well‑maintained hut sits near the lake, typically offering snacks and restrooms to day hikers when open, with overnight stays by reservation. It’s a handy waypoint but don’t rely on it as your only plan—hours can vary.
Logistics
Park at Lafayette Place; this lot is popular and fills early on weekends and during foliage season. Trekking poles help on the steeper bits, sturdy shoes are a must, and in winter conditions microspikes are recommended. The park operates year‑round unless posted, but some facilities may be closed in the off‑season, so come self‑sufficient.
Best Time to Hike
Mornings are best for cooler temps, softer light on the lake, and fewer crowds. Fall foliage weekends draw heavy traffic. Winter turns the climb icy—beautiful, but bring traction.
Variations
Want more challenge and bigger views? The tougher Hi‑Cannon + Lonesome Lake loop runs about 4.9 miles with roughly 2,335 feet of gain. It’s consistently steep and includes a ladder section; many hikers opt to ascend Hi‑Cannon, then work back toward the lake before returning to the trailhead.
Notes on Pets
Park pet rules within the notch corridor can be restrictive and vary by area. Additionally, pets are not allowed overnight at the lakeside hut. If you’re considering bringing a dog, confirm the current policy before you go.
