Overview

If you want to roll out of your tent and straight onto classic White Mountains trails, this is the place. Lafayette Place sits in the center of the Notch with direct access to the Lonesome Lake Trail and the Franconia Ridge loop via Falling Waters/Bridle Path. It’s a practical basecamp for Cannon, the Basin, the Flume, and the paved bike path that threads the length of the park.

Campsites & Facilities

There are 97 wooded tent sites, each with a picnic table, car parking, and a fire ring/open fireplace. Many are tucked into trees, a few sit in an open grassy area, and several cozy up to a shallow stream. Facilities are reliably maintained: flush restrooms, coin‑operated hot showers, potable water spigots, dishwashing sinks, and even a washer/dryer. The small camp store stocks essentials and firewood. Sites are dry—no power or water hookups at the pads—and terrain/levelness varies, so choose carefully if you’re picky about a flat tent pitch.

Location Perks

The paved bike path is right there and can carry you to favorites like Echo Lake beach and the Basin without moving your car. From camp, hiking options range from kid‑friendly strolls around Lonesome Lake to big mountain days on the ridge. Rock climbing is within 10 miles, and you’ll find good options for swimming and picnicking nearby. Bears do wander through the area—store all food and scented items in your vehicle.

Noise, Privacy, and Site Strategy

The tradeoff for the unbeatable location is road noise from I‑93; truck engine brakes can be loud at night. For quieter sleep, aim for sites farthest from the highway—several reviewers called out 33–35 as better. Privacy varies: some pads sit close together, and the Lonesome Lake Trail passes through the campground with a few sites right along it.

Season, Reservations, and Rates

The campground is open year‑round. During the peak 2025 season (May 16–October 26, 2025), full services—flush toilets, showers, potable water—are operating. Off‑season switches to self‑service/self‑pay with limited staffing and facilities. Of the 97 sites, 88 are reservable, 7 are first‑come/first‑served, and 1 is a youth group site. Typical peak‑season pricing is around $35 per night before taxes/fees. New Hampshire seniors get $5 off per night, and NH state employees receive 50% off campsites (excludes yurts/cabins).

Getting Around

A shuttle runs from the Peabody Base Lodge lot to Lafayette Place and the Falling Waters/Bridle Path trailheads Friday–Monday, 8:30 AM–8:00 PM, rain or shine. It’s $5 per person, cash only. Overnighting in the Cannon Mountain parking lot isn’t allowed—only in designated RV Sites 1–7.

Connectivity & Policies

Expect limited cell coverage: Verizon and AT&T have some service; T‑Mobile is often a no‑go. Wi‑Fi is available, but don’t count on it for heavy use. Pets are not permitted at Lafayette Place Campground.

Best Time to Visit

Weekdays are your friend. Arrive early for site selection and quieter vibes, especially during foliage season. As of September 18, 2025, the next few weekends will be extremely competitive. If you’re sensitive to noise, target midweek nights and choose sites far from the road.
