Overview

A long-running, family-operated base just outside St. Mary, Johnson’s mixes big-mountain views with a very practical setup: RV and tent sites, simple cabins, and an old‑school cafe. It’s a convenient east-side launchpad with occasional wildlife and a rustic, local vibe rather than a polished resort feel.

Where You’ll Stay

RV campground: 82 sites with options from full hookups (30A, water, sewer) to electric/water and dry camping. Note there’s no 50A service.
Tent camping: 75 shaded sites (including group areas), each with a picnic table and fire ring.
Cabins: Furnished units (like Curly Bear, Flat Top, Single Shot) have two handmade queen beds, A/C, mini‑fridge, microwave, and private shower. The Glacier Cottage sleeps up to five with a private shower. Unfurnished “camping cabins” use nearby shared facilities. None of the cabins/cottage include kitchens, coffee makers, dishes, or utensils. Pets are allowed in the campground but not in cabins/cottage.

Bathrooms, Showers, and Connectivity

Restrooms and token‑operated hot showers are available at the office and within the campground (tokens buy ~6 minutes). Facilities are basic but functional.
Wi‑Fi is free but limited and best near the office; don’t plan on streaming.
Cell service tends to be strongest on Verizon; AT&T/T‑Mobile can be hit or miss away from the office area.

The Cafe (On‑Site)

Johnson’s Cafe serves hearty, homestyle fare (think family‑style specials, house soup and bread, and pies). It’s popular and can see waits at peak times; hours can vary late season. There’s also a lounge/bar setting and free parking.

Handy Amenities

You’ll find a laundromat (with bill changer), dump station, propane, firewood, ice, snacks/ice cream, an ATM, mail drop, e‑bike rentals, daily/weekly RV storage in season, and local info. Tour convenience is a plus: both Red Bus Tours and Sun Tours pick up here. Campsites may offer a military discount.

What to Watch For

Some full‑hookup sites are narrow, closely spaced, or set on a side hill, which can make leveling and setting out chairs/awnings tricky. A few users report low water pressure, long sewer runs, and occasional fluctuations in cabin shower temperatures. The experience is intentionally rustic—expect personality and rules, not resort polish.

Wildlife & Campcraft

Wildlife wanders through the area from time to time. Keep a clean camp and follow food‑storage rules; hosts and rangers on the east side do take enforcement seriously.

Best Time to Visit

Peak season runs summer into early fall. For the cafe, go early to dodge lines, especially on weekends. Morning light is best if you’re rolling into the park for St. Mary Lake viewpoints or popular trailheads. Weather swings fast here—wind is common—so pack layers. As of the 2025 season, entering from St. Mary is typically less restricted than the west side, but always verify current NPS rules before you go.
