Overview
A true bush camp on the park’s far north coast, Waldak Irrmbal sits right behind a wild beach with big skies and bigger solitude. It’s the only coastal beach campground here, so it feels different from the escarpments and billabongs you see elsewhere—salt air, tidal flats, and a sense of being out on the edge.
Why go
If you’re chasing peace, coastal vistas, and a quiet base for fishing and birding, this is your spot. Visitor numbers are low, and the coastline delivers that end‑of‑the‑earth vibe you can’t get near the highway campgrounds.
Getting there
Access is via the West Alligator Head track off the Arnhem Highway. 4WD is essential. Expect sandy stretches that can bog 2WDs, and know that conditions vary—sections can be rough and the road often closes during/after the wet season. Check current access before you commit.
Facilities and what to bring
Facilities are minimal: a basic composting/drop toilet is provided, and that’s about it. There’s no drinking water, no bins, and no tables—bring everything you need and pack out all rubbish. Think ample water, food, recovery gear, and insect repellent.
Wildlife and safety
This coastline and the surrounding floodplains are rich in birdlife, and anglers come for the fishing. Crocodiles (including salties) are present—do not swim in the sea, rivers, or billabongs. Stay well back from the water’s edge and follow standard croc‑country precautions.
Atmosphere
Remote and quiet. You’re here for the wilderness feel more than any frills. Nights are dark and stars are superb when the clouds stay away.
Best time to visit
Dry season is best, when the access track is open and firm. Aim for weekdays if you want maximum solitude. For photography, early and late light works best on the beach and flats; midday can be harsh and hot.
