Kalbarri Skywalk

Kalbarri Skywalk is a visitor precinct at Inyaka Wookai Watju (West Loop), with two cantilevered platforms about 100 metres apart above the Murchison River. They reach 25 and 17 metres beyond the gorge rim, more than 100 metres above the river. It’s a memorable way to feel the gorge’s scale without setting off on a long walk; make time for both decks.

From one deck, the other gives you a sense of how far the steel walkway projects beyond the rim. The floor is open mesh rather than glass, but the height can still feel confronting if you’re uneasy with drops. Flies can also make it harder to linger.

The entrance name Kaju Yatka is Nanda for “sky” and “to walk.” A sandblasted Beemarra serpent runs along the path, and decorated message sticks stand near the entrance. The serpent is central to a Nanda Dreaming story; interpretation here shares Nanda history and culture. Look out for native animal sculptures and the precinct’s geology and fossil interpretation on the way to the decks.

The Murchison has cut roughly 80 kilometres of deep, red-and-white banded gorge through Kalbarri National Park over about 400 million years. From above, you can follow the river through the scrub and layered sandstone. The high view makes the length and shape of the gorge easier to read than it is from the road.

The Skywalk Cafe sits beside the platforms and serves breakfast and lunch items, sandwiches, homemade cakes, coffee and cold drinks. It operates seasonally, so check ahead if you’re relying on it for a meal. No particular signature dish was verified.

For a photo that shows both the structure and its setting, include the other platform against the gorge from the deck you’re standing on. The view from one cantilever to the other gives the drop and the span some scale. The precinct has no lighting, and summer temperatures in the river gorges can be extreme, so daytime is the practical choice.
