Overview

Known to Nanda Traditional Owners as Kaju Yatka (“walk to sky”), this pair of dramatic cantilevered platforms hovers about 100 m above the Murchison River Gorge. The steel walkways (approximately 25 m and 17 m long) deliver sweeping, vertigo-tinged views without requiring a strenuous hike. Interpretive art and displays weave in Nanda culture, geology, flora, and fauna, so it’s as educational as it is scenic.

Route and difficulty

From the large car park at the Inyaka Wookai Watju (West Loop) site, it’s a short, hardened path to the platforms—roughly 0.6–0.8 km return (about 0.5 miles total) with minimal elevation and a Grade/Class 1 feel. Wheelchairs and prams are well accommodated on the flat, level surfaces. Plan anywhere from 15 minutes to an unrushed hour depending on photo stops and time on the decks.

Facilities and access

Expect sealed road access (2WD friendly) about 37 km/30 minutes from Kalbarri town, plus accessible toilets, shade shelters, and plentiful parking. The adjacent Skywalk Café serves breakfast, lunch, coffee, and cold drinks (seasonal hours). The site is technically accessible 24/7, but there’s no lighting—visit in daylight unless joining a guided night-sky session that may be offered locally. Entry to the Skywalk is free, but a Kalbarri National Park pass is required; purchase at the Loop–Z Bend road booth, local offices, the visitor centre, or online. Note: caravans and trailers aren’t allowed past the Loop/Z Bend entry; unhitch as signed in town.

Best time to visit

Autumn through spring brings the most comfortable temps; wildflowers typically peak in August–September. Sunrise and sunset paint the gorge beautifully (and help with crowds). Midday can be harsh and hot with limited shade, and July school holidays can draw more visitors—arrive early or late for a quieter deck.

What you’ll see

Epic gorge panoramas up and down the Murchison, with a memorable “floating” sensation on the cantilevers. Interpretive exhibits explain how the gorge formed over millions of years and highlight Nanda stories and motifs you’ll spot in the artwork. Keep an eye out for native animal sculptures and rock details near the platforms.

Tips and cautions

It can be very windy on the edges—secure hats and loose items. Shade is limited; bring water, sun protection, and consider a fly net in warmer months. Pets are not permitted in the park (and 1080 baiting for feral animal control occurs in the region—lethal to cats/dogs). Before long drives or additional walks, check current park alerts and any road or facility updates.
