Kalbarri Skywalk

Kalbarri Skywalk is a flat out-and-back walk from the Skywalk car park to twin platforms above the Murchison River gorge. The mapped path is about 350 m each way, or roughly 0.7 km for the return. Allow 20 to 30 minutes to walk to both decks and take in the displays. It is a good choice if you want a close look into the gorge without a rough or demanding hike.

Published distance figures conflict: one labels the walk 0.4 km return, while its detailed measurement says 400 m one way. The mapped path to the platforms is about 350 m, so count the walk back to the car park as well.

The two cantilevers sit about 100 m apart. They project 25 m and 17 m beyond the gorge rim, more than 100 m above the river. Each gives you a different angle on the red-and-white cliffs, the scrub-covered slopes and the Murchison winding below. The walk is more about pausing on the decks than covering ground. For a photo that shows the height, keep some of the platform rail in the frame with the river below it.

The path is even, firm and step-free, with no steep sections. It is suitable for unassisted wheelchair users and prams, so this is one of the easier ways to get a close gorge view.

Kaju Yatka uses Nanda words for “sky” and “to walk.” The Beemarra serpent is sandblasted into the path, and message-stick artworks stand near the entrance. Look for native animal sculptures and the shaded interpretation about Nanda people and how the gorge formed; this is more than a quick walk to a lookout.

The gorge walls expose Tumblagooda Sandstone, the red-and-white banded sedimentary rock of this part of Kalbarri. It was laid down in the Silurian, roughly 400 to 430 million years ago. From the platforms, the stripes and broken cliff faces make that long history easy to see at a glance.

The Skywalk car park is on Loop Lookout Access Road at the West Loop. The precinct has toilets, shade shelters and the Skywalk Cafe beside the platforms, serving breakfast, lunch, coffee and cold drinks. The cafe keeps seasonal hours. Kalbarri National Park entry fees apply, but there is no separate Skywalk charge. Pets are not permitted in the park. If flies are active, a head net can make the short visit more comfortable.
