About The Loop Trail

Why go

  • Rim views and sandy riverbanks in one circuit
  • Nature’s Window and fossil traces along the route

Heads up

  • Uneven rock and loose sand
  • Little shade, no water and a strict summer cutoff
The Loop Trail is a 9 km circuit from Nature’s Window car park into the Murchison River gorge, down to the river and back up to the same access. Count the full walk from the lot, including the walk to and from the window; allow 3–5 hours. This is the half-day choice for hikers who want to leave the famous lookout and spend time among the gorge’s bends. The route changes from rim views to rough, sandy and rocky ground. It is a challenging Class 4 walk. If you only want the arch, Nature’s Window is a separate 1 km return walk that takes about 30–45 minutes.

Before you go

Parking

Begin at Nature’s Window car park in Kalbarri National Park. Stairs and a marked path lead to the window, then the Loop continues into the gorge and returns to the same access. Public toilets and shaded seating are near the lot; no drinking water is available.

Best time to go

There is no drinking water and little shade on the route. Plan roughly a litre of water per person per hour for a 3–5-hour walk, and don’t start if the heat makes that commitment unsafe. Temperatures in the gorge can reach 50°C. The best season is May through October; the Loop Trail closes after 7 a.m. from November through March. Public toilets and shaded seating are near the car park. Pets are not permitted in the park.

Safety

Class 4 terrain includes loose sand, uneven rock and rock hopping near river level. There is no drinking water and little shade; gorge temperatures can reach 50°C. The trail closes after 7 a.m. from November through March.

Hiking The Loop Trail

Start at the window, then keep goingFrom the parking area, stairs lead onto a sealed path with lookouts over the gorge.

From the parking area, stairs lead onto a sealed path with lookouts over the gorge. The final approach to Nature’s Window is rockier. The wind-worn opening in the sandstone frames the river below; it’s the landmark most people come for, and the short walk ends here. For the classic photo, keep the river in the opening so the layered rock frames the gorge beyond. The Loop continues farther into the gorge. Follow the marked route past the window rather than turning back at the short-walk endpoint.

Rim, rock and riverThe trail gives you changing views of the Murchison’s switchback bends.

The trail gives you changing views of the Murchison’s switchback bends. One stretch runs high along the gorge rim; then the route drops toward river level, where sand, uneven rock and short rock hops replace the firmer upper path. Sandy banks and river gums line parts of the lower walk. The sand can slow you down, and there is little shade once you are in the gorge. Expect a proper hike, not a smooth path between viewpoints. Keep an eye on the white route markers where the terrain changes; hikers describe the line as generally clear but some stretches less obvious.

The red-and-white bands are Tumblagooda Sandstone, laid down on tidal flats roughly 400–430 million years ago. Ripple marks around Nature’s Window formed under shallow-sea waves. Look at the overhangs near The Loop for root-like marks: they are fossilized burrows made by ancient worms, and the tracks on flatter surfaces record animals crossing damp sediment. The rock is doing more than making the gorge colorful; it preserves traces of an old shoreline and the life that moved across it.
