Circular Pool Lookout

Overview

This is the easiest way to get that classic Dales Gorge panorama: a short, signed walk to a rim lookout peering straight down at the near‑perfect circle of water framed by red banded‑iron cliffs and lush ferns. Expect to spend more time gawking and photographing than walking.

Current Status

The descent track to the base at Circular Pool is closed due to rockfalls and rain damage. The lookout remains open. Treat this as a viewpoint outing; you’ll be enjoying the scene from above and should not attempt the closed route.

Trail Specs and Connections

The lookout access is very short (about 0.2 miles total) with minimal elevation gain, and it’s described as having assisted wheelchair access. If you want a bit more walking without dropping into the gorge, the Gorge Rim Trail between Fortescue Falls and Circular Pool Lookout is an easier Class 3 option of roughly 2 km return with big views the whole way. When conditions and openings allow, a larger loop linking the rim and gorge floor around Dales Gorge is about 5.1 km and Class 4 with rougher footing and some rock‑hopping.

Best Time to Visit

Aim for May–September when temperatures are milder. Summer brings extreme heat and storm/flash‑flood risk. Go early or late in the day for softer light across the iron‑red walls, and more pleasant temps on the exposed rim.

Practical Tips

Park at the Dales day‑use carpark; the path to the lookout is signed. There are toilets but no potable water—bring your own. Nearby Fortescue Falls and Fern Pool are close options for hiking and swimming when open, and pair nicely with a quick stop at this lookout.

Safety and Etiquette

Rim edges are unfenced with loose rock—stay well back. Rocks become slippery when wet, and flash floods are a danger after rain. Carry plenty of water (at least 1 liter per person per hour), wear sturdy shoes, and avoid entering gorges within two hours of sunset. Obey all closures. Pets are not permitted in the park.
