Dales Picnic Area

Overview

Set on the rim of Dales Gorge, this day‑use hub is the easiest place to stage a classic Karijini day: picnic in the shade, then drop into Fortescue Falls and Fern Pool, or wander to Circular Pool Lookout. Expect red rock, figs and ferns, and spring‑fed water at Fortescue that flows year‑round.

Trails and lookouts from here

• Fortescue Falls Lookout – 150 m, Class 1, ~15 min return.
• Fortescue Falls Trail – ~800 m return, Class 3, ~1 hour; steps down into the gorge to the swimming pool below the falls.
• Fern Pool side track – ~600 m return from the base of the Fortescue stairs, Class 4, ~30 min.
• Circular Pool Lookout – ~150 m from the day‑use car park, Class 2/3, ~15 min return.
• Gorge Rim Trail – ~2 km return between Fortescue Falls and Circular Pool Lookout, Class 3, with short steep sections.
• Dales Gorge Trail – Class 4 along the gorge floor; allow up to ~3.5 hours on uneven, often wet rock ledges.

Note: The descent track to Circular Pool has been closed at times after damage; the lookout usually remains open. Check current status before you go.

Facilities

You’ll find shaded picnic tables, toilets and park information signage at the day‑use area, with additional toilets at the Fortescue Falls car park. BBQs are available here, and access roads to key sites have been sealed. Bring all the drinking water you’ll need; potable water is not provided in the park.

Safety and etiquette

Karijini can be brutally hot; carry at least a litre per person per hour when walking and wear sturdy footwear that grips on wet rock. Rocks can be smooth and slippery, pools are cold (especially April–September), and flash floods are a real risk—don’t enter gorges if rain is forecast and leave immediately if it starts. Avoid entering gorges within two hours of sunset. Fern Pool (Jubura) is culturally significant; keep voices low and don’t jump.

Wildlife

Around the gorge rims and shaded creeklines you may spot red kangaroos, euros, Rothschild’s rock wallabies and a wide range of birds. After rain, wildflowers like acacias and mulla mulla light up the area.

Best time to visit

Aim for early morning or late afternoon for gentler light on the red walls and cooler temps; swim in the middle of the day when the air is warmest. Peak visitation and campground demand run June–September, so expect more people then. From December to February, heat and storms are common—plan conservatively or visit earlier/later in the day.
