Route
For the Spa Pool, follow the Grade 4 gorge route upstream from the main pool. It’s roughly 1 km total (out‑and‑back), but the going is slow over uneven, sloping rock and boulders. Some parties spend close to 3 hours here with exploring and swims. Separate from this, there’s an easier 400 m return walk down steps to the waterfall and main pool—great if you want the views without the scramble.
Getting to Spa Pool
The final approach is more technical than many expect: slick, angled slabs, some hands‑on moves, and, depending on line, a short ladder section. Do not attempt if rock is wet or rain is forecast. At times, rangers have closed areas above the falls due to injuries—if signage says closed, skip it.
Best Time to Hike
Plan this one April–October for milder temps; March–May usually shows the waterfalls at their fullest, and swimming typically feels more inviting around September. Summer heat is intense, and the wet season can trigger road and gorge closures—always check park alerts before you go.
Tips and Safety
Wear grippy footwear (water shoes help on submerged sections). Avoid walking on wet rock; never dive or jump. Leave immediately if it starts raining—flash floods happen here. Bring plenty of water and supplies; Hamersley is remote and services are limited. Camping isn’t permitted at the gorge. A sealed road reaches the lower car park, which has upgraded facilities, and a new lookout near the car park offers a top‑down view if you’re not descending.

The tilted, buckled bands of ancient rock are the star—erratic layers sweep down to turquoise pools, making this one of the park’s most photogenic spots. The tiny Spa Pool steals the show, but the wider gorge is just as captivating when light shifts across the red and grey strata through the day.
