Overview

A bite‑size woodland escape beside the busy Muckross corridor, the Blue Pool Path links two short, signposted loops (Blue Pool and Cloghareen). Expect easygoing miles under tall trees with a short spur to the namesake pool. Distance varies by which loop you follow and how you mix them, but plan on about 1.9 miles total (roughly 3 km) with modest undulations and brief stream crossings. Most walkers take 40–60 minutes.

Trail Experience

Wayfinding is a breeze—there are frequent posts and even a dedicated trail for the visually impaired with Braille signage. Underfoot, it’s mostly narrow forest path with rolling ups and downs; after rain or in winter it turns muddy and slick. The pool itself sits just off the loop, with several informal spots to sit right at the water’s edge, plus a picnic bench near the entrance. You may see evidence of bikes on the track; this is primarily a walking/running loop, but it happens. Runners will enjoy the flow but should control speed on short downhill pitches.

Why Go

This is a calm, green pocket minutes from the marquee sights, and it feels overlooked. If you want a peaceful amble, a kid‑friendly stretch of legs, or a relaxed trail run, it delivers. It’s not about grand vistas—think dappled light, birdsong, and still water—so set expectations accordingly. Keep an eye across the road near the start: native red deer are often spotted grazing on the open ground there.

Logistics

Trailhead is a left turn immediately after the Muckross Park Hotel entrance on the N71. Parking at the start is tiny—space for one or two cars—so in summer you may need to park near the hotel or carefully along the road and walk up. Do not block the gate. Facilities are essentially nil on‑trail beyond that picnic bench.

Tips

  • Footwear with grip pays off; mud is common after rain and in winter.
  • Mix and match the two loops—they overlap—though the Blue Pool side is the more varied option.
  • Dogs are allowed but keep them on a lead.
  • For a quieter visit, aim for early or late in the day, or a non‑holiday weekday.

Best Time to Hike

Year‑round works. Summer is prime for picnicking by the water (but parking is tougher). After wet spells, expect mud and a couple of shallow, easy stream steps. Photographers get soft forest light most of the day; the pool is often calm early morning.

Pros

  • Excellent signage, including a trail designed for the visually impaired
  • Shaded picnic perches right at the water’s edge
  • Quick, quiet loop minutes from Muckross crowds

Cons

  • Trailhead parking fits only one or two cars
  • Can be muddy with small stream crossings after rain
  • Not a big‑view hike

Parking

Left turn immediately after the Muckross Park Hotel entrance on the N71; tiny lay‑by fits 1–2 cars. Otherwise park near the hotel or carefully roadside and walk. Do not block the gate.

Caution

Expect slick mud and a few shallow stream crossings after rain; short downhill sections can feel fast for runners; occasional bike traffic; extremely limited parking at the gate.
