Pilot Knob Gazebo

Overview

Pilot Knob Gazebo crowns the Schumann Preserve’s ridge with a classic wooden shelter and a knockout panorama of southern Lake George. It’s the payoff at the top of the preserve’s main route—short by Adirondack standards, but with views that punch way above its effort.

The Hike

From the preserve parking area, follow the Orange Trail for about 0.7 miles of steady ascent through mixed hardwood forest. Expect a rocky, sometimes steep tread; plan on 20–40 minutes up depending on pace. The trail pops you out into an open field with the gazebo perched at the edge—perfect for catching your breath and soaking up the view.

What You’ll See

From the gazebo, the lake spreads out below with islands, boats, and mountain backdrops. The open meadow makes it easy for groups to spread out, and the structure offers a bit of shade and a seat while you take photos or linger for sunset.

Wildlife

Forest birds are common here, and raptors occasionally work the thermals over the ridge. Deer and small mammals are around, and sharp eyes sometimes spot owls near dawn or dusk.

Practicalities

This is a popular, family-friendly outing—weekends and sunset can be busy, and the small trailhead lot fills quickly. There are no restrooms or water; bring your own. Footing can be uneven on the descent, so sturdy shoes help. Bugs can be fierce in late spring and summer.

Go Further

If you’ve got extra energy, continue past the gazebo on the blue-marked trail to a seasonal waterfall about a mile farther. It’s best in spring; during dry spells it may be just a trickle.

Best Time to Visit

• Early or weekday mornings for quieter trails and easy parking.
• Late-day for golden light and memorable sunsets—bring a headlamp for the hike down.
• Spring offers your best shot at the waterfall; summer is busiest. The gazebo itself has recently been rebuilt and is slated for a formal rededication in 2025.
