Pilot Knob Ridge and Waterfall Loop

Why go

If you want a fast payoff above Lake George, this is it. A short climb on the orange trail lands you at a gazebo with a sweeping lake panorama. Keep going on the blue trail and you trade crowds for a woodsy ridge walk that leads to a seasonal waterfall and a surprisingly deep little gorge.

The route

From the parking area on Pilot Knob Road, follow the orange markers uphill to the gazebo (about 0.7 miles one way). Many families turn around here for a roughly 1.4‑mile round trip with about 620 feet of gain. If you’re up for more, continue past the gazebo on the blue-marked loop to the waterfall and back around to close the circuit. Expect the full loop to run 3–4 miles total with roughly 600–650 feet of elevation gain, on natural dirt and rocky forest tread. Trails are well marked; orange to the view, blue for the longer loop.

What you’ll see

The gazebo overlook is the star, with a broad look across Lake George and sightlines toward Buck Mountain and the Tongue Range. Beyond, the blue loop feels quieter and more remote, weaving through ferny woods with interesting rock underfoot and a photogenic, seasonal waterfall after wet periods. It’s a great spot for photography—multiple vantage points, not just one.

Trail vibe and difficulty

This is a crowd-pleaser and can be busy near the gazebo on weekends. The initial climb has short steep pitches but is manageable with a moderate fitness base. The blue loop adds distance and a bit more effort, plus welcome tranquility once you leave the overlook zone.

Tips

• Start early—the lot is limited and fills fast on weekends.
• Go orange to the gazebo first, then decide if energy and conditions warrant the blue loop.
• The waterfall shines in spring snowmelt or after heavy rain; expect a trickle or even dry conditions in midsummer.
• Surfaces can be slick when wet, especially near the waterfall and along the gorge.

Best time to hike

Spring brings peak waterfall flow and wildflowers. Fall delivers excellent foliage and crisp air. Winter works for snowshoeing on these gentle grades. Summer is lush but buggy and busier—go early for parking and cooler temps.
