Stewart’s Ledge is the fast-payoff overlook locals love: an easy walk to a rocky perch with big, unobstructed views over Lake George and the Adirondack foothills. It’s a quieter alternative to Buck Mountain’s summit but still delivers that wide-open, classic lake panorama.
Start at the Buck Mountain trailhead on Pilot Knob Road (approx. 1750 Pilot Knob Rd). Follow the signed Buck Mountain Trail briefly, then make a key right onto an unmarked spur near a large stone—ignore the left horse path and the main trail straight ahead. From there, it’s a well-worn path to the ledge in about 20–30 minutes each way.
Expect mostly gentle grades with one short, steeper bit. The route can be muddy after rain. The overlook area is open rock with room to sit and soak in the view; you’ll likely recognize the iconic leaning tree that shows up in many photos from this spot. There’s also a geocache along the way if you’re into treasure hunting.
Sightings aren’t the main draw here, but the quiet, lower-traffic feel means you might catch birds, chipmunks, or deer—especially early or late in the day.
Stewart’s Ledge is known locally as a small rock climbing area, adding a bit of adventure cred beyond the viewpoint.
There are no facilities on this spur and the turnoff is unmarked—bring a map or GPS and water. Footing can be damp or muddy after rain, so sturdy or waterproof footwear helps.
