The Sagamore Resort

The Sagamore is a 70-acre, privately operated resort on a Lake George island, joined to Bolton Landing by a causeway. Its historic main hotel is part of a spread-out campus of lakeside lodges, restaurants, pools, family recreation, and golf. Plan this as an overnight stay, a meal, or a booked resort activity rather than a public park attraction. Restaurant and resort visitors who are not staying overnight pay for parking, and the resort’s public information does not spell out access to guest areas such as the beach and pools; confirm what your reservation or activity includes before driving over.

The present hotel was completed in 1921–22, the third Sagamore built on this island. The first opened in 1883 and burned in 1893; a replacement opened the following year and was lost to fire in 1914. The current Colonial Revival hotel was enlarged in 1929, carrying the resort into a new era while preserving its grand-hotel character.

The main hotel is only part of the property: lodges, condos, a spa, indoor and outdoor heated pools, and a 10,000-square-foot Rec Center with mini-golf, games, and a movie theater are spread around the island. That variety is a draw for families and longer stays, but expect some walking between rooms and activities. A guest shuttle connects the golf course, Club Grill, and Bolton Landing village; it is not a loop around every part of the property.

Lake George is the setting for much of the stay, from the waterfront terraces to boat outings. The Morgan, a replica of a 19th-century touring vessel, runs cruises of about an hour through the lake’s narrows when the activity is operating. The resort’s pools and Rec Center give families options on land too, though access to those facilities is tied to guest or activity arrangements.

The 18-hole course was designed and overseen by Donald Ross in 1928; its fairways run through hardwoods, with deep bunkers and rolling greens. Dining ranges from Italian and steakhouse meals to burgers and lakeside options. Visitors often single out the lobster roll, while menus and some venues vary by season, so make reservations for dinner and check what is open for your visit.

For a photo that reads as the Sagamore rather than a generic lake view, include the white hotel and its terraces above the shoreline. The lobby terrace and dock are a natural place to look for that pairing; morning light can pick out the grounds and water.
