Hoover Dam Visitor Center

Overview

Run by the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation, the Hoover Dam Visitor Center is the launch point for learning the dam’s story and getting below-the-surface access. Inside you’ll find modern exhibits, a short construction film, and admission to a 360-degree observation deck overlooking the dam, the Colorado River in Black Canyon, Lake Mead, and the Hoover Bypass Bridge.

Tours at a Glance

• Self‑Guided Visitor Center: $15 per person (ages 3 and under free) for exhibits, film, and the observation deck.
• Guided Powerplant Tour: $25 adults, $15 ages 4–16 (3 and under free). You’ll walk original tunnels, see a 30‑foot penstock, and view operating generators in the Nevada Powerhouse.
• Guided Dam Tour: $40 per person (3 and under free). Adds historic tunnels, an original elevator ride to the top, inspection tunnels, and a peek through a ventilation shaft. Sold on‑site only and commonly sells out—arrive early.

Tours generally allow wheelchairs/scooters on the Powerplant option; the full Dam Tour has limitations. Visitors must be 16+ to join a tour without an adult.

Hours, Closures, and Seasonal Notes

• Visitor Center and tours: daily 9:00 a.m.–5:00 p.m.; last tour departs 4:10 p.m.; doors close at 4:15 p.m. Closed Thanksgiving Day (Nov 27, 2025) and Christmas Day (Dec 25, 2025).
• Dam grounds: typically open 5:00 a.m.–9:00 p.m. From Dec 1, 2025–Feb 27, 2026 (Mon–Fri), the dam closes 7:00 p.m.–5:00 a.m. for maintenance—plan to be off‑site before 7:00 p.m. on those weekdays.

Security, Policies, and What to Bring

Expect airport‑style screening before ticketing. Prohibited on property: firearms, explosives, fireworks, drones, and marijuana; no weapons/knives in buildings. Bottled water is allowed; sealed food/drinks may be brought in but not consumed inside buildings. Interagency/America the Beautiful passes are not accepted here.

Parking and Getting Around

The closest parking is the Nevada‑side garage by the Visitor Center ($10). Oversize vehicles and trailers must use the Arizona side: Lot #9 ($10) or Lots #13–14 (free). Wheelchair rentals are available in the garage. After your visit, walk the top of the dam for head‑on views into Black Canyon—an easy add‑on that feels iconic.

Food and Facilities

Restrooms are available at the Visitor Center. There’s also an on‑site cafeteria; expect simple fare and higher prices typical of major attractions.

Best Time to Visit

Crowds swell late morning through early afternoon. For lighter lines and calmer exhibits, aim for 9:00–11:00 a.m. or 2:30–3:45 p.m.—which also aligns with the least‑busy Powerplant Tour windows. People typically spend 1.5–3 hours here. If you’re visiting in winter on a weekday, remember the 7:00 p.m. maintenance closure window.

Quick Game Plan

Buy or pick up tickets, do the exhibits and observation deck first, then your tour, and finish with a stroll across the dam for photos. Wear comfortable walking shoes and be ready for desert sun and wind on the plaza.
