Overview
Willowbrae Beach Access delivers that classic west coast combo: a quiet rainforest walk that opens onto a broad, wild stretch of Pacific shoreline. It’s a low-key gateway on the south side of the Long Beach unit, away from the big parking lots and surf crowds.
What Makes It Special
- Seclusion is the headline—this access tends to be calmer than the marquee beaches.
- The approach is half the fun: a lush, mossy temperate rainforest walk capped by a long wooden staircase down to the sand.
- From the main route you can reach a scenic beach at the south end of Florencia Bay, with a side path leading to tucked-away Halfmoon Bay.
What You’ll See
Expect driftwood-scattered sands, tide pools along the rocks at lower tides, and rugged headlands bracketing the views. The forest section features towering conifers, nurse logs, and ferny undergrowth—photogenic in any weather.
Wildlife
Keep an eye out for bald eagles cruising the shoreline and oystercatchers working the rocks. Tide pools can reveal sea stars, anemones, and crabs. Offshore, watch for seals, sea lions, and—during migration seasons—passing whales.
Know Before You Go
- The staircase is long and the return climb can feel stout; take your time.
- Tides matter. High tide can pinch beach walking and make some routes less pleasant; check tide tables before you go.
- Amenities are minimal. Bring water and snacks, and pack out all garbage.
- Dogs must be leashed to protect sensitive wildlife and habitats.
Best Time to Visit
- Early mornings or late afternoons offer the most solitude and softer light.
- Aim for a mid-to-low tide window if you want tide pools and wider sands.
- Weekdays are typically quieter than weekends, especially in summer.
- Overcast days can be fantastic for photography in the forest and along the shore.
