This is the signature campground tucked along the Big Sur River under towering redwoods. With 189 tent and RV sites spread through multiple loops, it feels woodsy yet organized, and the riverfront spots are the prizes. There’s no ocean access from here—this is a redwood-and-river scene, and it’s a lovely one.

Campsites & Facilities

Every site includes a picnic table, fire ring, and a parking spur; there are no hookups anywhere. Fresh water spigots, flush toilets, and token-operated hot showers ($1 = 5 minutes) are scattered across the campground. A dump station with potable water is available (included for registered campers; a fee for non-campers). There’s a small camp store for essentials and firewood. Hike-and-bike sites exist for those arriving by foot or bike, and there’s an en‑route overnight option for self-contained RVs in designated day-use lots.

Reservations, Costs & Limits

This place is wildly popular—reservations through the state system typically fill six months in advance. Standard sites run about $50/night; premium riverfront sites about $60/night. Hike/bike is $5 per person per night. Second vehicles are $10/night (max two vehicles and six people per site, and everything must fit within the site boundary). Check-in is 2 p.m.; check-out is noon. Peak-season stay limit is seven consecutive nights (30 nights per calendar year). Group camp is listed as closed until further notice. One simple cabin (no utilities) can be reserved separately and is listed at roughly $75/night.

Rules to Know

Quiet hours are 10 p.m.–6 a.m.; generator hours 10 a.m.–8 p.m.; no amplified music. Dogs are allowed in campsites and on paved roads (leashed) but not on trails. No wood collecting, and don’t hang hammocks or clotheslines from trees. Speed limit is 10 mph. Fires only in the provided metal rings.

Site Size & What Fits

Typical max lengths often cited are around 27' for trailers and 32' for RVs, but pad lengths vary—always check the specific site when reserving. There’s no overflow parking, so plan accordingly. Past advisories have noted occasional site or loop closures after storms; check the current campground map and reservations for updates (for example, some sites were reported closed after a February 10, 2024 landslide).

Connectivity

Cell service is spotty in Big Sur. Reports note strong AT&T coverage at the campground, some Verizon LTE (better just south along pullouts), and no T‑Mobile. If you need Wi‑Fi, the nearby lodge in the park offers guest access.

You’re camping amid classic coastal redwoods with the Big Sur River as your soundtrack. Expect regular critter cameos—think deer, jays, and squirrels—and follow food storage guidelines. Poison oak is common on the Central Coast; keep an eye out, especially with kids.

Nearby & Orientation

Pfeiffer Beach (separate from the state park and with its own fee) is down a side road about a mile south on Highway 1. Inside the state park you’ll find day-use areas, short walks, and seasonal campfire programs. Highway 1 is winding and can close or delay after storms—check conditions, especially if you’re driving a larger rig or arriving from the south.

Best Time to Visit

Shoulder seasons (spring and fall) are the sweet spot for snagging reservations and cooler sleeping temps. If you’re hunting for a last-minute site, cancellations sometimes surface at the entrance kiosk after 3 p.m., but it’s hit-or-miss. Clear nights here are great for stargazing under the redwoods.
