Overview

This is the park’s easiest redwood sampler: a 1.0‑mile loop with about 25 feet of total elevation change that stitches together the River Path and the Nature Trail. Expect towering coastal redwoods, a mellow Big Sur River stroll, and a few thoughtful interpretive stops. It’s short, family‑friendly, and a good first walk after arriving at the lodge area.

Route Snapshot

Start at the Redwood Deck by Big Sur Lodge or from Day Use Lots 1 or 2. The Redwood Deck showcases an old‑growth cluster—some trees are estimated at 500–800 years old—and the quirky “Proboscis Tree.” Continue on the River Path along the Big Sur River, where you’ll pass interpretive panels and a Civilian Conservation Corps–built amphitheater. Concrete steps reach the river’s edge, and you can optionally cross to visit the Ewoldsen Memorial Nature Center before looping back. The Nature Trail portion returns through a quieter forest mix—maple, cottonwood, and oak—before rejoining redwoods near the finish.

What Stands Out

  • A true redwood-and-river combo with minimal effort.
  • Historic CCC features add context to the landscape you’re walking through.
  • Printed self‑guided nature trail booklets are often available at the trailhead, making this a great intro walk for kids and curious adults.

Logistics and Rules

  • Distance: 1.0‑mile loop (total). Plan 30–60 minutes depending on stops.
  • Access points: Redwood Deck next to Big Sur Lodge, or Day Use Lots 1–2 inside the park.
  • Pets: Dogs are allowed on the River Path but not on the Nature Trail portion of this loop.
  • Fees & hours: Day‑use fee applies; day use typically 8 a.m. to sunset. Lodge guests receive complimentary access to this and nearby state parks.
  • Connectivity: Cell service in Big Sur is unreliable—download maps ahead.

Tips

  • If you’re pushing a stroller or need the smoothest surface, the River Path segment is the friendliest part; loop back the same way if avoiding the Nature Trail.
  • For a quick add‑on, pop into the Ewoldsen Memorial Nature Center (when open) via the short river crossing.
  • Highway 1 can close due to rockslides; check road conditions before you commit to the drive.

Flora, Fauna, and Feel

Watch for centuries‑old coastal redwoods on the Redwood Deck, then notice the subtle shift to maple, cottonwood, and oak on the Nature Trail segment. Wildlife commonly spotted includes deer, squirrels, raccoons, skunks, and—more rarely—bobcats. The loop is mostly flat and mellow; it can be over quickly, but it’s a pleasant sampler if you want big‑tree atmosphere without a big effort.

Pros

  • Redwood Deck features 500–800‑year‑old trees and the unique “Proboscis Tree.”
  • Historic CCC amphitheater and interpretive panels add meaning to a short walk.
  • Easy add‑on to the Ewoldsen Memorial Nature Center via a brief river crossing.

Cons

  • Dogs are prohibited on the Nature Trail half of the loop, complicating mixed groups.
  • Some creekside sections are roped with limited river access.
  • Very short; can feel more like a leg‑stretcher than a destination hike.

Parking

Day Use Lots 1 or 2 inside the park, or start from the Redwood Deck next to Big Sur Lodge.

Caution

Highway 1 is prone to rockslides and closures; verify road status. River access steps can be wet and slick. Cell service is unreliable. Dogs not allowed on the Nature Trail segment.
