Pros & cons
PROS
- Efficient Lower Lakes access from Entrance 2 with simple, well‑signed logistics
- Scenic long boat ride across Kozjak built into the route
CONS
- Crowded mid‑morning to early afternoon on narrow boardwalks
- Covers only the Lower Lakes; skips the Upper Lakes entirely
- Boardwalk sections can close during high water
Access via Entrance 2; follow signs to dock P1 to begin the route.
Wet, slippery boardwalks; check for Lower Lakes closures after high water; boat/shuttle frequency varies in colder seasons; no swimming.
Overview
Route F is a Lower Lakes–focused circuit that starts and ends at Entrance 2. Plan on about 4.6 km / 2.9 miles and 3–4 hours total, including a long lake crossing and a short shuttle. It’s mostly easy walking on wooden boardwalks and groomed paths with some stairs and brief ups/downs. Expect gorgeous canyon views, cascades, and that signature aqua water.
Route, Step by Step
1) From Entrance 2, follow the orange F signs down to dock P1.
2) Take the long, scenic boat across Jezero Kozjak from P1 → P3 (boat ride included with your ticket).
3) From P3, walk the Lower Lakes loop clockwise on boardwalks and paths. Watch for the signed spur to Veliki Slap (Big Waterfall) and viewpoints around Sastavci Falls.
4) After completing the Lower Lakes, continue to shuttle stop ST1 and ride ST1 → ST2 back to Entrance 2 (shuttle included with your ticket).
What You’ll See
The Lower Lakes deliver the park’s classic turquoise pools, tight canyon scenery, and a dense run of falls and cascades. The long Kozjak crossing is a built‑in breather with wide‑angle views before you drop into the intimate Lower Lakes boardwalks. The Veliki Slap viewpoint is the marquee stop; add the Sastavci overlooks for varied perspectives.
Is It Worth It?
Yes—if you’re based at Entrance 2 and want the Lower Lakes without backtracking to Entrance 1, this is the efficient, scenic choice. The tradeoff: it skips the Upper Lakes entirely. If you want more, consider Route H for both Upper + Lower from Entrance 2; for only Upper Lakes from Entrance 2, Route E is the better fit.
Best Time to Hike
Hit opening time or go late afternoon to sidestep the heaviest crowds on the Lower Lakes boardwalks and to make photos easier. In winter and shoulder seasons, boat and shuttle frequency can change, so confirm the day before.
Tips and Cautions
- Boardwalks can be wet and slick—wear shoes with good grip.
- Bring water and snacks; options inside the park are limited.
- No swimming in the lakes.
- After heavy rains or high water, some Lower Lakes boardwalks may close—check conditions at the entrance before committing.
Distance noted above reflects the Route F outing; transit segments (boat/shuttle) are part of the experience but don’t add walking mileage.
