Overview

Route K is the park’s longest marked loop and the most complete way to see both the Lower and Upper Lakes in a single day. Expect roughly 18–19 km (about 11–12 miles) total, taking most hikers 6–8 hours with photo stops. Surfaces alternate between wooden boardwalks over turquoise water and well‑made gravel or forest paths, with some stair sections.

What You’ll See

You’ll weave through the Lower Lakes canyon past classic viewpoints and Veliki Slap (the Great Waterfall), trace the shores of Lake Kozjak, then wander the Upper Lakes network toward the higher basins. Count on constant cascades, “over‑the‑water” boardwalk sections, and occasional higher rim paths that deliver wide, aerial‑style views. There are named viewpoints along the way, and you’ll encounter countless photogenic falls throughout the loop.

Route & Wayfinding

Start from Entrance 1 or Entrance 2; Route K is signposted and can be hiked clockwise or counterclockwise. Wayfinding is straightforward if you stick to marked paths and follow the K signs at junctions. Park maps at the entrances and on‑site “you are here” boards make quick checks easy.

Best Time to Hike

Start at opening time to stay ahead of the mid‑morning crowds on the Lower Lakes boardwalks. Spring brings the highest flows and lush greenery; summer offers long days but peak visitation; autumn trades thinner crowds for colorful foliage; winter can be magical but may come with ice/snow and partial closures.

Closures & Conditions

Staircases near Veliki Slap and the Supljara Cave climb have been reported closed at times; status changes seasonally and with weather. In winter, portions of the Upper Lakes or certain connectors may close altogether. Check current conditions at the entrance the morning of your hike.

Tips & Etiquette

Wear grippy footwear—the boardwalks can be wet and slick from waterfall spray. Pack water, snacks, and a light rain layer; services cluster near main hubs, not along most of the loop. Keep to marked paths, yield patiently on narrow boardwalks, and don’t lean over edges without rails. Dogs are allowed but must remain leashed.

Why Hike It

If you want the fullest, most immersive lakes experience and don’t mind a long day, K delivers—the scenery density is off the charts. If you’d prefer the highlights with less walking, consider the shorter, mixed‑transport programs instead.

Pros

  • Covers both lake systems in one continuous loop, maximizing scenery per mile
  • Quieter forested rim sections give crowd breaks between marquee viewpoints

Cons

  • Long day with stairs and slick boardwalks that demand steady focus
  • Occasional closures (staircases, cave, seasonal sections) can alter the plan

Parking

Park at Entrance 1 or Entrance 2; both serve as signed starting points for Route K.

Caution

Boardwalks are narrow and can be wet and slippery; expect stairs and occasional seasonal closures (e.g., staircases near Veliki Slap, Supljara Cave; winter ice/snow). Check conditions at the entrance before starting.
