Overview

About Dalvay Beach

Why stop

  • Quiet stretch with dunes and open Gulf views
  • Easy shoreline walking on broad sand

Heads up

  • Limited parking can fill on hot summer days
  • Stair-only access to the sand
This is one of the smaller beaches on the Brackley-Dalvay side of the park, and that is the appeal. The sand is broad and open, backed by grassy dunes that screen the parkway, and the Gulf stretches out with nothing to break the horizon. Smaller accesses along this stretch often see less traffic than the larger, better-known beaches nearby, which makes this a good choice if you want a swim and a walk without much company.

Best time to go

The beach stairs are seasonal, installed from the Victoria Day weekend in May until late September. In winter the beach accesses are not maintained and washrooms are closed, so treat a cold-season visit as a dune-top look rather than a walk down to the sand.

The park is very busy in summer, and on hot days it pays to arrive early: softer light on the dunes, cooler sand, and the easiest parking. Visits outside the peak weeks, and to the smaller accesses like this one, generally feel calmer.

Access

  • Access is by stairs only, so there is no ramp down to the sand here.
  • Parking is limited at the access.
  • Washrooms are not at the beach itself. The nearest ones are at the Gulf Shore trailhead near Dalvay, where there is also an EV charging station.
  • Beach wheelchairs and mobility mats are offered elsewhere in the park, not at this access.

Walking and photosPlan on a long, flat shoreline walk rather than a formal trail.

Plan on a long, flat shoreline walk rather than a formal trail. Heading out and back along the sand can easily fill an hour or more. For photographs, shoot from the sand looking back at the dune line, or frame the dune-grass path down to the access. Stay on the marked access and off the dunes; they are fragile and protected, and Piping Plovers use this shoreline, so watch for signed and roped areas and give them a wide berth.

Bring everything you need with you: water, sunscreen, a hat, and a windbreaker, since the north shore catches high winds. Footwear you can carry helps on the stairs and hot sand. Pets are not allowed on national park beaches, so leave the dog at home or walk it elsewhere.

The limited parking is the main limiter, and on a hot summer day the small lot can fill. Stair-only access rules it out for anyone who needs a level route to the sand, and the lack of washrooms at the access itself means a short trip to the Gulf Shore trailhead if you need them. It is also a short beach, so if you want a big sweep of sand with more services, the larger beaches nearby are the better fit.

What you actually see: a sandy path cut through the dunes, a wooden access point down to the sand, driftwood along the high-tide line, and shifting cloud and surf over open water. There are bubbling brooks in the area as well. It is a short beach compared with Stanhope or Brackley, but the shoreline walking carries on well past the access in both directions.
