About Dalvay-by-the-Sea National Historic Site

Why stop

  • Distinctive Queen Anne Revival architecture between lake and ocean

Heads up

  • Seasonal interior and dining access
  • Upkeep and service can be uneven
The building is the draw. Built 1896 to 1899 for Alexander McDonald of Cincinnati, this rambling estate is a national historic site for its architectural significance as a domestic example of Queen Anne Revival style, all gables, dormers and bay windows, set between Dalvay Lake and the ocean. Film fans know the exterior as the fictional White Sands Hotel from the Anne of Green Gables films and Road to Avonlea.

Visitor services generally run May to mid-October, and the resort operation with interior access and dining is concentrated June through the end of September. Outside that window, treat this as a grounds-and-architecture visit. The grounds are the reliable part of the trip; the interior and the restaurant are not.

  • Walk the grounds, which are open year-round, and take in the house from the lawns and the lakeshore side.
  • Step down to the beach and lakeshore right beside the property, with seabirds over the waves.
  • Cycle in, since the site is reachable from the park by bike path trail.
  • When the resort operation is running, look inside at the grand wood-panelled interior, the central hall and the large fireplace, and day visitors may dine in the restaurant.

Address is 16 Cottage Crescent, off Dalvay Crescent, York, about 25 minutes drive from Charlottetown. Follow Route 2 east, then Route 6 to the Dalvay entrance, then Dalvay Crescent. The site sits inside the national park, so park entry fees apply, though there is no separate fee for Dalvay itself. On site you will find Parking, a Restaurant and Restroom.

For photographs, come early morning or late in the day, when low light works best on the gables and dormers. If you want to see the interior or eat here, plan your visit inside the June to September resort window and treat it as a destination stop rather than something squeezed between other errands.

This is an old property, and some visitors report visible maintenance and upkeep issues along with inconsistent service. Set expectations for a characterful historic building rather than a polished modern hotel. Praise is consistent for the setting, the architecture, the grounds, the fireplace and the dining, which is a fair summary of what most people come away with.
