Glenorchy Lagoon

Start from the Glenorchy waterfront car park by the jetty and red shed. The Glenorchy Walkway forms a 5 km loop that typically takes 1–2 hours at a relaxed pace, with boardwalk sections, bench viewpoints, and a signed shortcut through the middle if you want to trim the distance. The track also brushes the lake edge and Rees River, so expect varied scenery as you go.

On calm mornings and late afternoons the lagoon turns into a giant mirror, throwing back crisp mountain reflections that photographers chase. It’s a regionally significant wetland, so look and listen for birdlife all along the margins.

You’ve got a real chance of wetland specialists here. Fernbird/mātātā have been recorded at the lagoon, and around the wider Glenorchy/Upper Wakatipu wetlands you might spot paradise shelduck, New Zealand scaup, Australasian shoveler, grey teal, pied stilt, black swan, white‑faced heron, royal spoonbill, little pied and great cormorants, welcome swallow, plus bellbird/korimako, tui, fantail/piwakawaka, and silvereye in the surrounding scrub. Overhead, braided‑river species from the nearby Dart and Rees—like black‑billed gulls, black‑fronted terns, wrybill, and South Island oystercatchers—may cruise past in season. Bring binoculars.

Park at the Glenorchy waterfront car park; the walkway is signed from here. Public toilets are at the car park, but there’s no drinking‑water tap, so fill up before you arrive. The Department of Conservation advises not to park or access from Glenorchy–Paradise Road due to safety concerns. After heavy rain, parts of the lagoon section can flood; stick to the boardwalks.

Insect repellent is essential—sandflies love this place. Wear comfortable walking shoes (trail runners are plenty); some sections can be muddy in spring. Sunscreen and a hat help on the open stretches.

The trailhead area includes the historic Glenorchy Railway Shed, once tied to the old steamship era on the lake. Film buffs will appreciate that the lagoon area doubled as a "Dead Marshes" location in The Lord of the Rings—another reason those misty mornings feel otherworldly.
