Ben Lomond is Queenstown’s signature summit day hike: big alpine views, a well‑defined track, and options to tailor the effort. From its 1,748 m summit you can look over Lake Wakatipu, The Remarkables, Coronet Peak, Cecil and Walter Peaks, and on clear days as far as Mt Earnslaw/Pikirakatahi and Mt Aspiring/Tititea.

Tips for visiting Ben Lomond

Start early; once above the trees there’s no shade or wind shelter.
Carry 2–3 liters of water per person—there are no refills on the track.
If driving, avoid time‑limited spots at the gondola base and walk from longer‑stay parking.
Check gondola hours and fares before relying on it to shorten the hike.
In spring and winter, bring traction and be willing to turn back at the saddle.

Best time to go

Exposure is the name of the game once you’re above the trees. In winter and shoulder seasons—including mid/late spring around November—snow and ice can linger above the treeline. The saddle‑to‑summit section can become treacherous without traction; carry and know how to use microspikes/crampons and turn back if conditions deteriorate. Check conditions with the Queenstown DOC Visitor Centre and monitor the forecast. The area is under a year‑round outdoor fire ban; practice strict Leave No Trace.

Facilities & Logistics

There’s a single DOC drop toilet at Ben Lomond Saddle. There is no reliable water on the track. Your last dependable spot for water, snacks, and toilets is at the Skyline gondola complex before you set out. Parking near the gondola base is scarce and often capped at short time limits; many walkers simply come on foot from town or park farther away on residential streets and walk in. If you plan to use the gondola, note that hours and prices change and opening is often mid‑morning—plan your start accordingly.
