- Crucial turn: At the dam, turn right and cross the bridge to continue toward the lookout. Left leads to a much longer route you don’t want for this viewpoint.
- Pipeline walkway: Two-plank boards with a railing trace the pipe as the views open up dramatically.
- The lookout: A short spur leads to the helipad—the classic photo spot with nearly 180° lake-and-mountain panoramas. You may spot rock climbers on the nearby wall.

It’s about 4 km return with ~332 m of gain, typically taking 1.5–2.5 hours depending on photo stops. The trail is moderate overall—short but steep in places, with uneven ground and a little exposure on the pipeline section (there’s a handrail). The first big views arrive on the walkway; the helipad is the capstone.
Getting There
The trailhead sits off State Highway 6 (Devil’s Staircase), roughly a 20‑minute drive from Queenstown and about 7 km south of Jack’s Point. Look for a gate, open it, drive roughly 400 m up a potholed dirt road to the parking area, and close the gate behind you. There’s no public transport. If signage and conditions allow, some with true 4WD shorten the walk by driving higher up the initial zig-zags.
Facilities and Conditions
- A single long-drop toilet sits near the end of the zig-zags where the hiking track begins; none at the car park or lookout.
- No potable water—bring your own. Sun protection and snacks are smart.
- The track can be slippery after rain; the pipeline section has exposure but includes a railing and passing bays.

Aim for a clear, sunny day to get the full pop of lake color and far-reaching views. Mornings or weekdays are typically quieter and give softer light; late afternoon brings warm tones over the water but can draw more people.
