Ho'okipa Beach Park

Overview

Ho'okipa is the North Shore’s showstopper: a white-sand, rock-studded beach beneath a cliff-top lookout where you can watch elite surfers and windsurfers carve powerful swells. The name means “welcoming comfort,” and it’s an essential early stop on the Road to Hana.

Why it’s special

• The surf scene is the draw—this spot has been pivotal since the 1930s and still hosts major competitions. From the Ho‘okipa Lookout you get sweeping ocean views and a front-row seat to the action.
• Wildlife regularly steals the show. Hawaiian green sea turtles often bask on the sand (especially late afternoon), and you might even spot a monk seal.

What to expect

• Two main areas: the upper Ho‘okipa Lookout with its dedicated pull-off/parking, and the lower beach-level lots by the pavilions. Restrooms, freshwater showers, picnic tables, and shaded grassy areas make it an easy hangout for spectators.
• Lifeguards are typically on duty during the day, but this isn’t a swimming beach. Expect strong currents, shore break, and rocks—great for expert board sports, not for wading with kids.

Turtle and wildlife etiquette

Keep your distance and enjoy with a zoom lens. Turtles often blend in with the dark rocks—give them space and view from the lookout if in doubt.

Logistics that matter

• The entrance/flow is one-way. If you’re just doing a quick stop, use the upper lookout lot so you don’t get stuck looping back.
• Parking can be plentiful early but fills quickly by late morning and on weekends or event days.

Best time to visit

• Early morning: easiest parking, softer light, less wind—nice for photos and a calm start to your drive.
• Late afternoon to sunset: best chance for turtle haul-outs and warm golden light. Afternoons are windier (great for windsurfing), but crowds spike.
• Winter: biggest, most dramatic surf if you’re chasing the spectacle.
