Hāmoa Beach

From Hāna, continue on Hāna Highway and turn onto Hāneoʻo Road, near mile markers 49 and 50. Parking is limited to narrow roadside spaces, with no dedicated lot. Steps descend to the sand, so this isn’t step-free beach access and the climb back is part of the stop. Arriving earlier improves your odds of finding a space.

Hāmoa faces open ocean. Surfing, bodyboarding and bodysurfing are part of its appeal, but waves and currents can get strong enough to make casual swimming a poor choice. Conditions change day to day, so check the water when you arrive. Winter often brings stronger surf, but season is no safety guarantee. I couldn’t confirm a lifeguard service here.

There are no food vendors at the beach, so bring your own food and drinking water. The beach has portable toilets, a rinse shower and shaded picnic tables, but current maintenance isn’t confirmed. Don’t assume the nearby hotel’s chairs, shuttle or guest facilities are public.

The pale and dark grains make a salt-and-pepper look; this isn’t a uniform black-sand beach. For a photo, take the steps down and shoot along the curve with dark coastal rock and greenery in frame. Alau Island can add a landmark offshore when it’s visible.

Hāmoa sits beside the larger Mokae landscape. Archaeological surveys there have documented earlier habitation, agriculture and ceremonial features; local accounts connect parts of Mokae with ancestral burial grounds. Conservation purchases in 2021 and 2022 put 60 acres of Mokae/Kaholaiki land into stewardship, with easements limiting future development along part of the coast. The exact relationship between the names Hāmoa and Mokae is unsettled; Mokae names the wider land and is sometimes given as an older name for the beach.
