Congress Group

Overview

The Congress Group is the marquee cluster of giant sequoias—famously nicknamed the House and the Senate—along the Congress Trail, a mostly paved, lollipop-shaped loop that starts near the General Sherman Tree. Expect an easy-to-moderate stroll with gentle grades and a few short ups/downs through the heart of Giant Forest.

What You'll See

You’ll wander among photogenic sequoia groupings, including the House and Senate, with the hulking President Tree nearby. Massive cinnamon-colored trunks, cathedral-like groves, and soft forest light make this one of the best places for tree portraits and scale shots. As you leave the Sherman hub, the crowds drop fast, and the grove gets wonderfully quiet. Keep an eye out for mule deer; black bears occasionally roam the area, too.

Getting There

Start at the General Sherman Tree area; the Congress Trail branches from the main path beyond Sherman. There’s a main lot accessed off Wolverton Road and a smaller lower lot that is typically reserved for accessible parking in peak season. Lots can fill late morning through afternoon—go early or later in the day to keep it easy.

On the Trail

The loop is about 2.7 miles on pavement with a few stairs. It’s clearly signed—stick to the paved path to protect the grove’s shallow root systems. There are no facilities along the loop; use restrooms at the parking areas and top off water before you start.

Season & Conditions

The area is typically accessible year-round, though winter storms can bring snow and occasional road restrictions. In winter, this becomes a serene snow walk or snowshoe; traction can help on icy patches.

Best Time to Visit

Early morning is ideal for soft, directional light filtering through the grove and for avoiding parking headaches. Weekdays are calmer than weekends. Late afternoon works for warm tones, but plan extra time to climb back up to the parking area from the Sherman zone.
