A mellow half-mile loop through mixed-fir forest and giant sequoias, Hazelwood circles a pretty meadow with frequent wildlife sightings and interpretive signs. It’s an easy, family-first stroll with firm tread, gentle grades, and plenty to look at—fallen sequoias with towering root systems, footbridges over trickling water, and lightning-scarred trunks that tell the forest’s story.
The core loop is 0.5 miles total with about 50 feet of gain—expect 15–30 minutes at a relaxed pace. Many people log closer to 0.7 miles depending on where they start, and it’s common to push it to ~1–1.5 miles by walking from the Giant Forest Museum or linking short connectors. The tread is generally firm and about 6 feet wide with an average grade around 6.5% (briefly steeper in spots).
You’ll wind through a classic Giant Forest mix: sequoias, firs, and a lush understory of ferns, dogwood, elderberry, and manzanita. Expect interpretive signs, the satisfying sound of water at small crossings, and the occasional “tunnel” experience through or beside downed sequoia wood along approaches described by visitors. The meadow edges are a prime place to pause quietly—deer and birds are common, and black bears are sometimes seen at dawn and dusk.
Trailhead access is from a tiny parallel pullout on Generals Highway. When those few spots fill (they do), park at the Giant Forest Museum and walk about 0.2 miles on a shaded connector and crosswalk to reach Hazelwood. The loop links with the Alta and Rimrock trails if you want a longer but still-easy outing, and there’s a short connector toward the popular Big Trees Trail across the road. In summer, shuttles help avoid congestion. Basic facilities may be available seasonally near the trailhead; otherwise use the museum area.
Go early or on weekdays for the most solitude; midday can feel busier given the proximity to Big Trees and the museum. Shoulder-season light is gorgeous in the meadow, and dawn/dusk are your best bets for wildlife (give bears ample space). Trails are generally accessible year-round, but winter storms can close roads and chain controls are common—always check conditions.
Hazelwood is a low-effort, high-payoff loop that’s quieter than its famous neighbor across the road. If you want a short sequoia sampler with real chances for wildlife and easy add-on options, it’s an excellent pick. If you’re chasing a workout or big views, it can feel too short—pair it with the Big Trees Trail or continue on Rimrock/Alta for a more satisfying wander.
Small parallel pullout directly off Generals Highway; when full, use the larger Giant Forest Museum lot and walk about 0.2 miles via the shaded connector and crosswalk to the Hazelwood trailhead. Summer shuttles help avoid congestion.
Black bears frequent the meadow at dawn/dusk—give them space; bear spray is not permitted. Winter storms can close roads and chains may be required. Stay on the path to protect fragile sequoia roots and watch for slick bridges after rain or snow.
