Set just above Grant Grove, this quick walk leads to a wide-open vista across Hume Lake, Kings Canyon’s deep glacial gorge, and far High Sierra summits. It’s the kind of payoff-to-effort ratio you brag about—minutes of walking for miles of scenery.

What You’ll See

From the overlook, you get a textbook read on Sierra geology: a U-shaped canyon carved by ancient ice, rugged granitic peaks, and long ridgelines fading into the horizon. Wayside signs help you pick out major features and peaks while you linger.

Getting There & The Walk

Panoramic Point sits at the end of Panoramic Point Road, roughly a couple of miles uphill from Grant Grove. The paved path climbs moderately with benches and pullouts along the way. For the easiest grade, start near the restroom and favor left turns at junctions. If you’re feeling energetic, continue beyond the overlook on the unpaved trail toward Park Ridge Fire Lookout for broader perspectives.

Facilities

You’ll find a small paved parking area, vault toilets, picnic tables, and bear boxes at the trailhead. There’s no indication of potable water—bring your own. Expect limited spaces during peak times.

Road & Seasonal Notes

The approach road is narrow, steep, and winding; drive slowly and expect tight passing spots. Motorhomes and trailers aren’t allowed. In winter, the road usually closes—reaching the viewpoint then means hiking, snowshoeing, or skiing.

Wildlife & Safety

Mule deer show up often, and black bears live here—store food properly and give wildlife plenty of space. This is a quick stop, but it’s still mountain country; carry water and layers.

Best Time to Visit

Sunrise and sunset deliver the most dramatic light and better odds of clear views before heat and haze build. Weekdays or early mornings help with parking. If you stay for sunset, bring a headlamp for the walk back and drive out carefully.
