Fort Ikoma Airstrip

Overview

A small bush strip in the northwest, Fort Ikoma Airstrip sits about 1 km from Fort Ikoma Gate, ~1 km from Nyabogati Hippo Pool, and ~3 km from Retima Hippo Pool. It’s quieter than Seronera—handy if your camp is nearby or when the main central strip is overloaded.

Why you’d use it

Operators lean on Fort Ikoma as an overflow/alternative to Seronera or to shorten road transfers for lodges in the Fort Ikoma/near‑western‑central area. If you’re deeper in the Western Corridor, Kirawira B or Sasakwa/Grumeti airstrips can be closer; for the far north (Mara River area), Kogatende is usually the call. Match the strip to your camp to avoid long, bumpy—and costly—road links.

What to expect on arrival

This is a simple gravel airstrip with pickup/drop‑off by lodge or tour vehicles. Don’t count on facilities at the strip itself: no food, no Wi‑Fi, and no public parking. For toilets, your driver will whisk you to Fort Ikoma Gate about a kilometer away. Picnicking is for designated picnic sites in the park, not at the airstrip.

Flights and routing

Regional safari carriers serving the Serengeti include Auric Air, Coastal Aviation, Flightlink and Regional Air. Most routings originate in Arusha with hops among multiple Serengeti strips; flight time is roughly an hour depending on stops. You can also route from Dar es Salaam, Kilimanjaro International and Zanzibar on some schedules—your operator will confirm which strip is served on your dates.

Wildlife context

You’re landing next to productive game areas, with the hippo pools just minutes away and frequent resident wildlife on transfers. In some dry‑season windows, portions of the Great Migration move through the broader west/north, and there’s even a past report of the airstrip “overflowing with wildebeest.” Timing shifts with rainfall year to year, so treat that as a bonus, not a guarantee.

Park entry and permits

Arriving by air means you won’t pass a gate first; your operator arranges park permits in advance and they’re checked on or around arrival. Confirm this before you fly so your transfer is seamless.

Best time to visit

This strip stays calmer than Seronera most of the year. Expect the most flight activity from roughly July to October when extra mid‑day services are often added. If you’re pairing a landing with quick wildlife time, morning or early‑afternoon arrivals line up well with nearby hippo pools and onward game drives.
