Kogatende Bridge

Overview

Kogatende Bridge is the low, concrete causeway over the Mara River that connects the Kogatende side to the Lamai/Serengeti Mara side. It sits near the Kogatende ranger post and airstrip, and it’s a tactical spot for guides during migration season. Expect to stay in your vehicle—riverbanks here have crocs and hippos, and rangers are strict during crossings.

Why it matters

This crossing is a practical gateway between the two banks and a launch point for classic viewing spots along the river. When water levels allow vehicles to pass, it saves time getting between Kogatende and Lamai—handy if herds are moving back and forth.

What you’ll see (and when)

July–October is prime time here: wildebeest and zebra stage on the banks, hippos and large crocodiles hold the pools, and predators work the fringes. Crossings have no schedule—your guide may stake out locally marked points (#4–#7) and wait hours for the moment to happen.

Current status notes

Floods have damaged or submerged the causeway in recent years, leading to periodic closures. A higher replacement bridge was slated for commissioning around November 2025, but opening confirmations were not widely available—check with your lodge or operator for the latest before you travel.

On‑site reality (amenities)

There’s no formal infrastructure at the bridge: no restrooms, café, shop, or staffed facilities. Parking is essentially roadside pull‑offs under your guide’s direction. Plan bathroom stops at the Kogatende airstrip or your camp, and bring water and snacks in the vehicle.

Best time to visit

Aim for July–October for crossings. Arrive early and be patient; peak‑season crowding is real, and waits can be long. If the river is uncrossable, being on the wrong bank can cost sightings—many travelers hedge by splitting nights on both sides or keeping a short hop flight in mind.

Getting there

Most visitors fly from Arusha to Kogatende Airstrip and begin game drives from there; the bridge and main crossing points are a short drive away.

Tactics, safety, and conduct

Pick operators who respect the rules. After high‑profile incidents in July 2025, rangers tightened enforcement—no blocking crossings, no disembarking near wildlife, and stick to authorized tracks. Keep noise low at the river and pack out all trash.
