Sand River

Overview

Straddling the Tanzania–Kenya boundary, Sand River is a tributary of the Mara and a classic migration corridor right by Bologonja Gate. Its shallow channels make it one of the earliest and most reliable entry points for herds moving between northern Serengeti and the Maasai Mara, so it often bookends the migration season.

What You’ll See

When the migration is on the move, wildebeest, zebra, and gazelle gather, mill, and suddenly surge across the river. Predators work the approaches; crocodiles are less of a factor here than at the main Mara River, though they occur downstream. Outside peak months, elephants, giraffe, buffalo, and big cats still use the riparian strip and nearby kopjes.

Best Time to Visit

Mid–late July commonly brings the first crossings here, with action continuing into August–September as herds shift. Crossings are fickle—build in flexibility and expect to wait. A 3–4‑night base in the north greatly improves your odds.

How to Experience It (Serengeti Side)

Base yourself in Northern Serengeti (Kogatende/Lamai). Fly‑ins use Kogatende Airstrip, from which game drives can reach Sand River/Bologonja as well as the main Mara River. Do not plan to cross the international border at Sand River Gate; formal immigration is typically handled elsewhere.

Landscape Notes

You’re in volcanic grasslands punctuated by ancient granite kopjes—natural lookouts and den sites that concentrate wildlife and give you elevated vantage points.

Responsible Viewing

Never block entry/exit paths the herds might use. Keep a generous stand‑off distance, remain quiet, and be patient—rangers may limit vehicles and time at sensitive sightings. In Serengeti areas, stay on roads, keep speeds down, and don’t alight except at designated spots; drones require permits and are not allowed during crossings.

Is It Worth It?

If you want intimate, early‑season migration drama without the full‑blown chaos of the main Mara River, Sand River is a savvy play. It rewards patience with close, photogenic crossings and active predator patrols.
