Pros & cons
PROS
- Only in-park fuel stop on Skyline Drive
- 24/7 pay-at-the-pump when operational
CONS
- Fuel is pricier than outside the park
- Limited amenities at the pumps; use the Wayside next door
- Pumps have had periodic closures/upgrades—verify status
Overview
Big Meadows Gas Station is the park’s lone place to fill up—hugely convenient if you’re cruising Skyline Drive and the gauge dips. It sits beside Big Meadows Wayside around mile 51, right in the heart of the park’s main services hub.
What to Expect
This is a basic, self-serve setup—think a couple of pumps offering unleaded and diesel. No store or cafe at the pumps themselves. For restrooms, snacks, groceries, and grab-and-go food, step into the adjacent Big Meadows Wayside.
Why Stop Here
- It’s the only gas in the park, period.
- Central spot for anyone camping at Big Meadows, visiting the Byrd Visitor Center, or linking hikes from this area.
Good-to-Know Caveats
Pumps have seen periods of closure for upgrades, and the broader Wayside complex is typically seasonal. Don’t assume fuel is guaranteed—check status and top off when you can. Expect higher-than-town prices.
Wildlife
Big Meadows is famous for wildlife at dawn and dusk—white-tailed deer and wild turkeys are common, and black bears sometimes browse the meadows. Enjoy the views from a distance and never approach or feed wildlife.
Nearby Services
- Big Meadows Wayside: restrooms, snacks, groceries, outdoor essentials.
- Big Meadows Lodge and Campground are close by.
- EV drivers: charging is at Byrd Visitor Center in the same complex.
Best Time to Visit
Fuel is pay-at-pump 24/7 when operational, so early morning or midday on weekdays is easiest. Weekends and fall color season bring lines. In winter, expect reduced services around the complex and verify pump functionality before relying on it.

- 03If the pumps are down, head to towns outside the park for fuel.
- 04Use Big Meadows Wayside next door for restrooms, snacks, and basic supplies.
- 05EV drivers: plan for the charger at Byrd Visitor Center in this complex.
