Little Stony Man

Why hike it

If you want maximum payoff for minimal effort, Little Stony Man is your move. A brief climb delivers you to rocky cliffs with sweeping views over the Shenandoah Valley, Massanutten Mountain, and the Blue Ridge—especially striking at sunrise or sunset. It’s one of the park’s best quick-view hikes and a crowd favorite for good reason.

Route and distance

Expect about 1.0 mile total with roughly 200–350 feet of elevation gain. Some guides present it as a short loop from the Little Stony Man parking area; others describe it as an out-and-back—either way, it’s short, signed, and straightforward. The route follows the Appalachian Trail through typical Shenandoah forest to the Little Stony Man Cliffs. Footing is mostly packed dirt with rocky stretches and stone steps near the overlook.

What you’ll see

The star is the cliffy overlook—a broad, photogenic greenstone outcrop (metamorphosed basalt) that frames wide-open vistas. On clear days you’ll pick out patchwork farmland and distant ridgelines; on hazier days, the views flatten. In spring, wildflowers dot the forest; in fall, the foliage show is excellent. The cliff band is also popular with rock climbers—give any active routes a wide berth and keep dogs close.

Best time to hike

• Spring: Fresh greenery and wildflowers; comfortable temps.
• Summer: Big, vibrant views—but also peak crowds. Go early or on weekdays.
• Fall: Arguably the best—crisp air and standout foliage.
• Winter: Quiet and clear vistas, but rocks and steps can ice up—bring traction if it’s been cold.

Aim for a clear, low-haze day for the best long-range views, and bring a layer—wind whips across the cliffs even in warm weather.

Tips and comparisons

• Park at milepost 39.1 on Skyline Drive (Little Stony Man lot) and follow the signed path. The lot is small and fills quickly.
• Dogs are allowed on Little Stony Man (leash required). If you extend to the higher Stony Man summit via certain routes, note that pets are not permitted there—plan accordingly.

Heads up

This is a cliff edge—watch footing, keep kids and pups close, and be mindful of gusts. After rain or in winter, expect slick rock and icy patches. There are no facilities at the trail; bring water and snacks.
