Perched at mile 39.7 on Skyline Drive (elevation ~3,380 feet), Hemlock Springs Overlook is a quiet, quick pull-off with a wide-open, east-facing view. You’re looking across Nicholson Hollow with Pinnacle Ridge beyond—classic Shenandoah layers that glow nicely in early light.

Why it Matters

The overlook is named for the eastern hemlocks that once thrived here. Most were lost to the invasive hemlock woolly adelgid, and you may still notice stark reminders of that die-off. It’s a sobering slice of Shenandoah’s ecological story, set against a serene panorama.

Wildlife

Expect songbirds flitting along the edge, with chances to spot deer—and occasionally a fox—during the quieter hours. Bring binoculars if you enjoy birding or picking out distant ridgelines.

Some hikers use Hemlock Springs Overlook as a starting point for a short walk to Timber Hollow Overlook. It’s a simple way to stretch your legs between viewpoints without committing to a big hike.

Know Before You Go

This is a basic pullout: no restrooms, water, or picnic tables. Standard park entrance fees apply, and one guide notes fees may be collected at the parking-area trailhead when rangers aren’t on duty via an honor system. Expect cooler, breezier conditions than in the valley—pack a light layer.
